Family papers, 1714-1964.

Family papers, containing genealogical information, correspondence, clippings, financial records, and photographs. Part of the collection consists of transcripts and photocopies of letters from William R. King and a journal of his European trip as the secretary of the American legation to St. Petersburg, Russia. Other correspondence in the collection consists of letters to his niece, Catherine Ellis, who spent time in Paris with him when he was minister to France. Other family members and descendants documented in the correspondence include Thomas D. King, William T. King, Evelyn H. King, Alice Devane King, and Frederic D. King. Much of the later correspondence is concerned with the donation of King family artifacts to the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History. The collection also includes financial and estate records of the King family. Of special interest is a notebook documenting the lives of the slaves on the King plantation. A small plat map of the estates of William Rufus and Thomas D. King and financial records of different King family accounts can also be found in the papers. The collection also documents later interest in the life of William Rufus King, with newspaper clippings about King and correspondence and papers about a historic monument erected in King's memory in Havana, Cuba.
